Sexton got out of his car and walked up to the veterinarian’s office three days later.

Reese came out of the entrance and stopped when she noticed him. “What are you doing here?”

“Hey.” He pointed to her outfit. “You look pretty.”

She straightened her purse strap on her shoulder. “I’m wearing scrubs and run-over tennis shoes.”

He smirked. “You wear them well.”

She managed a light grin. “What’s up? Did you need to tell me something about the case?”

“Why do you act like that’s all that’s between us?”

“Because it is.” She walked toward the parking lot. “At least it should be.”

“I can’t accept that answer, Reese.” He hurried in behind her. “There’s something more than the case between us and we have to deal with it.”

“I don’t even know you.” She swung around when she reached her silver Mazda. “What? Are you in love with me or something?”

“I’m attracted to you and I like you a lot already, Reese.”

“Why do you like me?” She got out her keys. “I’m just curious. Is it because I like to watch people have sex? Is that all that’s drawing you to me?”

He raised his head. “At first it was, but I genuinely care about you.” He scratched his head. “After what happened between us the last time we were together, I don’t understand why we’re having this conversation. Aren’t we past this?”

“What do you want from me, Sexton?” She unlocked the driver’s door.

“I want to get close to you.”

“You finger-fucked me didn’t you?” She threw her purse in the car. “How much closer can we get?”

He stood closer. “A lot and you know it.”

“I’m attracted to you but as far as more than what we’ve been doing, the answer is no.”

“I can finger-fuck you but I can’t take you out on a damn date?” He held his waist. “You know how messed up that sounds? How pathetic that makes me feel?”

“If you want me to sleep with you then—”

“No!” He got in her face. “This isn’t about sex. It’s about you, Reese. Please, I wanna get to know you without all the other bullshit.”

“All this other bullshit is me.”

“No it’s not.” He touched her hand. “Just admit that you feel something for me that’s more than sexual and it scares you.”

“Okay, I’m scared.” She waved her keys. “I don’t wanna get hurt and I told you that.”

“But I’m not gonna hurt you.”

“You could because I’m falling in…” She closed her eyes.

“You’re falling in love with me,” he whispered. “That’s what you were gonna say.”

She glared at him. “I’m tired of falling in love and it ending up nowhere.”

“It doesn’t have to be like that.”

“If we got together I’d have the opposite problem. Instead of being afraid of you not accepting me for who I am, I’ll always think the voyeurism is the only thing that matters to you.”

“It’s not. That’s just a part of you and I want the chance to know more. Please just give me the chance, Reese.”

“Look at me and be honest.”
